“Give ear to my words, O LORD, Consider my meditation. Give heed to the voice of my cry, My King and my God, For to You I will pray. My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up.” Psalm 5:1-3

It is 6:00am on a early March morning, and as I look out the window, it is still dark. Despite it still being dark, I have an anticipation that the Sun is coming soon.

David prayed to his King, the LORD, in the morning. It says of him that, “I will look up.” Strong's Definitions: צָפָה tsâphâh, tsaw-faw'; a primitive root; properly, to lean forward, i.e. to peer into the distance; by implication, to observe, await:—behold, espy, look up (well), wait for, (keep the) watch(-man).

David gives us what to do before and after prayer. Before we pray, we should direct our prayer. The idea behind direct is not "to aim" but "to order, to arrange. In other words, it’s intentional, personal, and deliberate.

After we pray, we look up with expectancy to heaven, really believing that God will answer. This is where true hope comes from.

“Let holy preparation link hands with patient expectation, and we shall have far larger answers to our prayers." (Spurgeon)

My prayer for us today is that we direct our focus to the King and keep looking up.

Love & Prayers,

Alan James Schrader
